Autumn mountain ridges and forest glowing in the low evening sun

Fall Peak is Here: Your North Georgia Weekend Event Guide

Posted on October 9, 2026

If you have spent any time driving up Highway 515 or rolling down GA-400 lately, you have felt it in the air—crisp 50-degree mornings, clear blue skies, and the very first pops of gold and red along the ridgelines. October is easily our favorite month in the North Georgia mountains, not just because the weather is immaculate, but because our local communities come alive with some of the biggest, best-loved traditions of the year.

Buying a home in North Georgia isn't just about square footage or acreage—it's about adopting a lifestyle. Whether you are coming up from Atlanta for a day trip or you are actively scouting mountain properties while you're in town, here is your insider guide to what is happening across our favorite North Georgia counties this weekend, Friday, October 9 through Sunday, October 11, 2026.

1. Ellijay & Gilmer County: The Georgia Apple Festival

Gilmer County is officially the Apple Capital of Georgia, and this weekend kicks off one of the state's premier autumn events.

  • The Main Event: The 55th Annual Georgia Apple Festival takes over the Ellijay Lions Club Fairgrounds on Saturday (9 AM–6 PM) and Sunday (9 AM–5 PM). Expect over 300 craft vendors, hand-carved woodwork, handmade pottery, and more apple-themed food than you can handle.
  • Must-Do: Grab a freshly fried apple pie from the local civic club booths inside the fairgrounds—get in line early because they go fast.
  • Local Tip: Traffic along Highway 515 near South Main Street gets heavy by mid-morning. If you want to skip the thickest crowds, park early or take a scenic back-road detour through Hwy 52 East and swing by B.J. Reece Orchards or Hillcrest Orchards for pick-your-own apples and tractor rides.
  • Real Estate Snapshot: Ellijay remains a hotbed for buyer interest, especially for cabin rentals and small farms with orchard views. If you're driving through East Ellijay or out toward Cherry Log, keep an eye on the mountain ridge developments.

From handmade crafts to fresh orchard-baked goods, Ellijay delivers the quintessential North Georgia fall experience every October.

2. Hiawassee & Towns County: Georgia Mountain Fall Festival

Heading further northeast toward Lake Chatuge brings you into Towns County, where mountain heritage meets lakeside views.

  • The Main Event: The Georgia Mountain Fall Festival opens its gates Friday, October 9, at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds right on the shores of Lake Chatuge. Running all weekend (10 AM daily), it features regional arts and crafts, a historic Pioneer Village with live blacksmithing and craft demonstrations, and carnival rides.
  • Live Music Highlights:
    • Friday, Oct 9 (7:00 PM): Country hits with the Bellamy Brothers & Exile on the main stage.
    • Saturday, Oct 10 (7:00 PM): Brad Kaylor & Mineral Bluff Revue.
    • Sunday, Oct 11: Sunday morning worship service (11 AM) followed by afternoon music and family activities.
  • Local Tip: Take 15 minutes before or after the fair to pull into the Lake Chatuge Recreation Area off US-76 for photos. The backdrop of the lake against the mountain peak reflections in mid-October is tough to beat.

Crisp mountain air, glowing stage lights, and live country music make the Georgia Mountain Fall Festival a must-visit every October.

3. Alpine Helen & White County: Peak Oktoberfest Celebrations

If you want energy, traditional Bavarian polka, and cold imports, Alpine Helen in White County is the place to be this weekend.

  • The Main Event: Helen Oktoberfest is in full swing at the riverside Helen Festhalle (1074 Edelweiss Strasse). October brings daily operations, and this weekend (Oct 9–11) features headline performances by the Alex Meixner Band and the Aaron Dussing Band.
  • What to Expect: Bratwurst, soft pretzels, authentic German beers, and lively dance floors inside the Festhalle, plus town-wide biergartens along Main Street and the Chattahoochee River.
  • Local Tip: Parking in downtown Helen during peak October weekends can test anyone's patience. Park in one of the perimeter pay lots near Unicoi Turnpike and walk in, or grab lunch early at Hofer's of Helen or Bodensee Restaurant before heading to the Festhalle. If you need a break from the noise, head five minutes down the road to Anna Ruby Falls for a quick paved hike to the twin waterfalls.

4. Blue Ridge & Fannin County: Fall Foliage & Historic Downtown Strolls

Fannin County is the Trout Capital of Georgia, but in October, it’s all about autumn colors, hard ciders, and historic charm.

  • Blue Ridge Scenic Railway: October is prime fall foliage season on the rails. Trains depart from the historic depot in downtown Blue Ridge, traveling along the Toccoa River to the twin border towns of McCaysville, GA, and Copperhill, TN. (Tip: Fall trips sell out weeks ahead, but call the depot for last-minute cancellation tickets!).
  • Mercier Orchards: Just a few miles north of downtown on Hwy 5, Georgia's largest apple orchard is buzzing. Stop in for hard cider tastings, fresh apple cider donuts, and panoramic orchard views.
  • Downtown Vibes: Spend Saturday afternoon walking East Main Street and West Main Street. Check out the local art galleries, grab a craft pint at Grumpy Old Men Brewing, or reserve an outdoor table at Chester Frosting’s Cafe.
  • Real Estate Snapshot: Downtown Blue Ridge commercial space and high-end residential cabins in Aska Adventure Area continue to draw strong long-term investment.

5. Dahlonega & Lumpkin County: North Georgia Wine Country

Looking for a slightly more relaxed pace with sweeping mountain vineyard views? Dahlonega delivers every single time.

  • Wine Trail Tastings: Lumpkin County is the heart of Georgia's wine country. Spend your Saturday afternoon touring top-tier wineries like Montaluce Winery & Restaurant, Wolf Mountain Vineyards, or Cavender Creek Vineyards. Fall foliage from the tasting room decks at Montaluce looks like a Tuscany picture postcard.
  • Downtown Historic Square: Stroll around the historic square for boutique shopping, farm-to-table dining at The Spirits Tavern or Bourbon Street Grille, and live acoustic music outdoors.
  • Local Note: Dahlonega’s famous Gold Rush Days takes place next weekend (Oct 17–18), making this weekend (Oct 9–11) an ideal time to visit the historic square with slightly manageable crowds.
