Opening weekend of the 56th Annual Helen Oktoberfest brings electric energy to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Saturday, September 12 is the official kickoff celebration, featuring traditional parades, ceremonial keg tappings, and townwide German festivities that fill the streets of Georgia's Bavarian alpine village.
Morning Strategy & Parking Guide
10:00 AM – Early Arrival & Breakfast: Arrive before the crowds to secure parking in city-owned paid lots on Edelweiss Strasse/Chattahoochee Strasse or Narr Weg. Two-hour free city spots are available at Unicoi Hill Park and Riverside Park. Fuel up at Hofer's of Helen Bakery & Cafe with fresh Bavarian pretzels, apfelstrudel, and espresso.
11:00 AM – Parade Spot Scouting: Walk down to Main Street or Unicoi Hill Park to claim a prime viewing spot along the parade route before roads close to traffic.
Afternoon Parade & Keg Tapping Schedule
12:00 PM – The Official Oktoberfest Kickoff Parade: The grand procession starts at Edelweiss Strasse, turns left onto Chattahoochee Strasse, and moves right along Main Street. Expect costumed Bavarian dancers, traditional brass bands, decorated floats, and local dignitaries marching through town.
2:00 PM – The Official First Keg Tapping: Head straight to the Füssen Biergarten at the Helen Festhalle (1074 Edelweiss Strasse). Official dignitaries alongside special guests from Füssen, Germany perform the ceremonial tapping of two opening kegs to formally launch the festival. Admission to the Festhalle is $15 on Saturdays ($25 for a Friday/Saturday weekend pass).
3:00 PM to 5:00 PM – Townwide Charity Keg Circuit: The celebration expands throughout downtown as local establishments host staggered keg tappings supporting local community programs: Cowboys & Angels Restaurant at 3:00 PM, Alpine Brew Deck at 3:30 PM, Cafe International at 4:00 PM, and Bodensee Restaurant at 4:30 PM.
Evening Festhalle Festivities
6:00 PM to 11:00 PM – Polka, Brats & Bier: Return to the main Festhalle floor as live German bands take the stage. Dance the polka, sample sizzling bratwurst with sauerkraut, and enjoy imported German biers late into the night.
Real Estate & Investor Insight

Properties within walking distance of Edelweiss Strasse or short-term cabin rentals with private hot tubs command maximum nightly rates on opening weekend, proving why downtown condos and close-in mountain homes remain the highest-yielding real estate assets in White County.
