If you haven't been up to North Georgia yet this May, the humidity hasn't quite settled in, and the local towns are buzzing. Here is how to spend your Saturday.
Morning: Farmers Market in Dahlonega, GA
Start your day at Hancock Park, just off the historic Square. This isn't just a place to buy tomatoes; it's a whole Saturday morning ritual. It runs from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, but parking on the Square can be a headache after 10:00 AM. Your best bet is the University of North Georgia (UNG) parking deck. It's free on weekends, shady, and only a two-block walk to the market.
Afternoon: The Rhododendron Festival in Hiawassee, GA
Next, take the scenic drive over to the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds. The Hamilton Gardens are home to one of the largest collections of rhododendrons in the Southeast, and they are stunning this time of year. The festival features local crafters and live music. Entry to the gardens is typically a $10 donation that goes toward preservation. Parking at the fairgrounds is free and very accessible. It's a great spot for those who want a view without a strenuous hike.
Late Afternoon: Laurel Ridge Floral Walk in Helen, GA
If you want to actually get in the woods, head to Smithgall Woods State Park. They are hosting a guided Naturalist Walk specifically to look at the spring flora. This is a bring-your-camera kind of event. The walk is from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM; make sure to call ahead to register. There is a $5 parking fee per vehicle.
Wait, There's More!
If you have extra time this weekend, here are 3 Bonus Stops to consider:
Whether you're heading home with a trunk full of fresh market finds, a belly full of award-winning BBQ, or just a camera roll full of rhododendrons, we hope your Saturday in the mountains is exactly the reset you needed. There's a certain magic to North Georgia this time of year before the summer heat really kicks in, so make sure to roll the windows down on the drive back.
If you're sticking around for the rest of the weekend, stay tuned—tomorrow is all about celebrating Mom with some of the best views and events the region has to offer!
